So, after getting hacked by Russians, I am tentatively back. Because I don’t really know much about databases, I had to manually re-upload all of my posts. In the process, I lost all of the comments, my permalinks got screwed up, some of the dates on the posts got messed up, and although I still have all of my post tags, they got jumbled up, so for now all of the old posts lost all of their tags.

I am running the newest version of WordPress now and I have a new theme. One of those two upgrades *should* have plugged whatever security hole was used to get in. BTW, what the hackers were doing was adding an invisible iframe to the top of all of my pages which was redirecting IE users to a file downloading website of some kind. If you weren’t using IE, you would have just noticed some slow-loading pages and the script ran itself.

If this happens again, I may have to ditch WordPress – or learn a LOT more about web security (something I’m not excited about devoting the necessary hours to.)

Hopefully, I can get back to regular-ish blogging now!

  1. I’m glad you are back, Tim! Don’t let this get you down. You may also want to look into a backup plugin that will automatically back up your blog and allow you to restore everything if this happens again. Some of them aren’t free, but it might be worth it. I think the easiest thing is to keep up with the WP upgrades, change your password regularly, and you can also change your unique keys in your htaccess file every so often too.

Also, if you are using the twentyten or twentyeleven theme and are customizing the CSS manually in the theme editor, you probably want to make a child theme to hold all your customizations. This is because these themes are WP’s main themes, and are updated every time WP is. This means that your customizations can get over-ridden if you update WP. This has happened to me and it’s annoying.

Keep up the awesome blog! I always do a happy dance when I see it’s been updated! :)

    • Some of the pages that were getting queried in the malicious code were definitely of Russian-speaking origin – I suppose they could have been from some other Russian speaking country.

    • Good question, and I think that’s the whole point. A lot of site admins never even check IE besides some really basic compatibility checks. Then when grandma checks out your website using her pre-installed IE browser and gets redirected to some other site, she confusedly clicks around and downloads viruses, gives up information, etc.
