One of the questions I often get asked at board game nights with new players is “where do you find all of these games?” This post is the first in a series I intend to write as an answer to that very question. Each post will focus on some great links to places where you can read about board, card, miniatures, or RPG games. These are the places I check almost every day to find that next great game to buy. First up in this post, board games:Board Game Geek – This is the big bad daddy of board gaming websites. Here you”ll find reviews, images, conversations, trades and games for sale – anything and everything having to do with the board gaming hobby. What this site is most useful for though is its database: a constantly expanding crowd sourced encyclopedia of every board game ever made. The site also ranks the games based on user ratings though this should be taken with a grain of salt – some games are better for some groups or players than others, and really any game in the top 300 or 500 in the list will be a fun game for the right people.

Fortress Ameritrash – There are three or four main categories into which most board games fit. In the hobby, these are Euro Games (typically short play time, and low conflict), War Games (direct conflict in a real or fantasy warfare setting with a focus on simulation), Abstracts (focusing completely on mechanics and totally ignoring theme), and Ameritrash (games heavily focused on theme and the emotional aspect of gaming with friends). Fortress AT, a website totally devoted to this last category, began as a reaction to what some perceive as a undue focus on euro games at Board Game Geek to the exclusion of the other types. The reviewers and commentators at Fortress AT are, for the most part, a boisterous and sometimes crass crowd but they provide some valuable info and perspectives on the AT side of the hobby. Also, check out the Trash Talk forum for some great conversations about games, movies, video games, entertainment, life, and just about everything else – just be prepared for language that would make a sailor blush.

Shut Up & Sit Down – Shut Up & Sit Down is a board game review blog and video cast by two British gamers, Paul and Quinns. Their written reviews are interesting, entertaining and thorough, but it is their video reviews that keep me coming back. Each episode gets better and better and they are packed with solid information and wall to wall humor.

Fantasy Flight Games – Fantasy Flight is one of the most popular producers of Ameritrash games and their website is a great place for info on what”s coming up from their designers. They also have a pretty great forum for talking about games and strategy with Fantasy Flight Games fans.

Cool Stuff Inc. – Aah, CSI. THIS is where I go to buy my games. I have shopped at (relatively) local game shops, eBay, other online shops, etc, but Cool Stuff Inc. is always where I end up when ordering. They have great service, solid selection, an easy to use website, ROCK BOTTOM prices, free shipping on orders of $100 or more, and if that wasn”t enough, they give you a repeat customer discount which increases as you spend more with them. For in-print board games, I really have no good reason to buy from any other shop.

Well, there you go – that”s where I go to get the scoop on board games. Next time, I”ll talk about where to read about, talk about, and buy miniatures games.
